In my experience, I've found that "carbing up" works well for bulking. When I say "carb up" I mean using the good carbs such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, sweet potatoes, etc. The diet is just one part of it though. Training in the gym with heavy weight, lower reps, and a higher amount of sets (4-5 sets) helps out greatly.
As far as supplements are concerned, I'm a huge fan of stacking a good weight gainer protein along with a high quality, high carb, creatine. Last time I did a bulk, I combined Mass XXX and Cell-Tech Hardcore. Along with the diet and training, these supplements treated me VERY well.
